Rachel Pringle is an antagonist from the Mask of Bimshire. She is a vindictive, manipulative obeah witch who seeks to collect on the debts owed by her clients. Especially those from Veronica Harding, whom she absolutely despises. She is the Practitioner to whom Dorian Nelson must repay with human hearts. She also uses her extensive history and knowledge of witchcraft to establish connections with the upper echelon of the Dark Arcs. Though she can never get within their ranks.
Practitioners
In Offset, obeah men, voodoo sorcerers or witch-doctors are called Practitioners who operate within the Dark Arcs. There are often in the form of street vendors, hawkers or travelling merchants. However, once they are registered to trade obeah magic, they are classified as Practitioners.
Design
Rachel Pringle is five feet, one inch tall, with a pudgy frame and sallow brown skin that sags. Her features are twisted with deep wrinkles which stretches when she smiles. Her lips are thin and her eyes are a twinkling black. She often wears a long polka-dot dress, with a wide collar and a straw hat that covers her eyes. Rachel also carries a large bag which has many items including an ink pen that she uses for spells.
Personality
Rachel has a polite charm that fits in with old Bimshire, akin to a Bajan grandmother you would find in rural communities. She has a sweet drawl that hides her deception and malicious intents which often snares her victims. Beneath the veneer hides a deep pride for her work which she has dedicated 75 years to master. However, there is a petulance towards those who have higher magical status than her and she believes is undeserving. This creates a volatile shift in personality when cornered and depending on the power dynamics, this can make her into a malevolent threat (as with Dorian Nelson) or a pathetic coward (as with Sulemann’s associates).
Fighting Style/ Abilities
Rachel Pringle never fights directly with opponents as a Practitioner. Her magic often takes time to prepare and execute and thus relies more on treachery for her spells. She uses a pen with special ink to inscribe the runes necessary for her blights. This is shown in giving Dorian Nelson his magical arm and various other displays of magic. She also uses magical items such as the red plastic bag to store the hearts Dorian stole.
Rachel also depends on minions to do her bidding such as the Gorilla Unit , or make-shift servants like Dorian Nelson or Jamba. This covers any weakness she has from direct confrontations with stronger opponents.
Cultural References & Allusions
Rachel Pringle is a nod to Rachael Pringle Polgreen – a pivotal figure in Barbadian History. Rachael was a hotelier and brothel owner who became one of the first mulatto women to operate a business in the colony. Rachael’s legacy is complex due to her beginnings as an enslaved woman and her rise to owning the Royal Naval Hotel during post-colonial times. Some see her as a figure of empowerment for black women, or an example of the prosperity to be gained for catering to the British empire after gaining freedom. However, there has been some discourse under her shrewd methods and her ownership and treatment of other slaves.
In Offset, Delvin liked the idea of Rachel being a savvy old obeah witch, and to frame her as an antagonist who is dangerous because of her shrewd character and manipulations. Delvin also felt that she fit into the business of the obeah trade and serves as a prime example of what a Practitioner could be.
